Common Questions About Traveling in Xinjiang

Guide to Obtaining a Border Defense Permit

GoPamir PlateauBorder permits are required for border areas such as Tashkurgan and Baihaba. How to apply:(1) At your household registration location: Bring your ID card to the local Public Security Bureau or Government Service Center for free processing. Specify "Tashkurgan County, Kashgar Prefecture, Xinjiang" or "Baihaba Village, Habxian County, Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang." (2) Within Xinjiang: After arriving in Urumqi or Kashgar, a travel agency will handle the process on your behalf. You must provide the original ID card. Processing time is approximately 1–2 business days.Important Notes:The Border Permit is typically valid for 3 months; we recommend applying within 1 months before your trip. Children must bring their household registration book, and foreign visitors need to obtain a Foreigner's Travel Permit in advance.

Food Safety:Xinjiang cuisine features beef and mutton as staples. Travelers with sensitive stomachs are advised to bring digestive medication. In some areas, the water is hard; bottled water is recommended for drinking.
Altitude Sickness:The Pamir Plateau ranges from 3000 to 4500 meters in elevation. Some visitors may experience mild altitude sickness. We recommend taking Rhodiola beforehand, avoiding strenuous activity upon arrival, and drinking plenty of water.
Sunscreen and MoisturizerXinjiang has strong UV radiation and a dry climate. SPF 50+ sunscreen, lip balm, and moisturizing masks are essential.
